Airing our Dirty Laundry...

One of my least favorite things to do is laundry. My mother is the absolute best at "doing" laundry. She can get out just about any stain, iron any sort of shirt, and fold a fitted sheet into a perfect square. Me? My family is lucky if I separate lights and darks, my ironing is atrocious, and me trying to fold a fitted sheet is like trying to run on a waterbed. I work real hard, but still don't get anywhere. However, laundry is a necessity, so last week my husband went to our Kentucky home to begin working on-you guessed it- the laundry room. Unfortunately, I am not able to go up there too much to help out and this laundry room needs a whole lot of work.

The laundry room is located at the front left corner of the picture above. It was not part of the original house, but was added many years later.

The view inside my laundry room. . That big, white, thing in the back that looks like R2D2's less attractive cousin is actually a water heater. As you can tell just from this quick view, the floors, ceilings, and walls need plenty of help. I really do wish this was one of those times where I could show before and after pictures. Unfortunately, right now, this house is like my life during this renovation, one big before picture. Anyway, my husband and my father-in-law did get plenty of work done. Although I think that they too, felt like they were running on a waterbed.

The idea was to check out the wiring and plumbing in the laundry room. They ended up taking down awful paneling and 1/4 round "trim". I have the word trim in quotes because I am not real sure what the purpose of the 1/4 round is at this point. Anyway, they ended up checking plumbing and wiring as well and getting alot of foundational stuff done. Hence, no pretty "after" photos to share. I have to decide where the cabinets are going to go. The good news is that the cabinets that are in there are in good shape. I have to also decided what type of washer and dryer unit I want. Front load? Top load? Scrubbing board? A rock to beat my luandry on? Not sure. I am pushing for a tiled floor that looks like brick to coordinate with the exposed brick wall that is in my kitchen. Don't worry! That dropped down ceiling in my kitchen will be discussed at length! So, hopefully before too long, I will have some nice "after" pictures to share!

The kitchen is overall, not that bad. There are a few tweeks here and there that I want to do in this space. I mean the counter tops are a no-no, and there is an overabundance of chalk paint. Dont get me wrong, I like chalk paint. But it is not my main means of communication, especially on the backsplash behind the sink. An odd choice. This room will come later. Right now I need to keep my focus on the laundry room located behind the white door on the left in the picture above.

My mantra is one room at a time...
